Queen’s Fountains

Fire & Blood

Queen’s Fountains were a public water system designed to bring clean water to the people of King’s Landing. Proposed by Septon Barth and approved by King Jaehaerys I after Queen Alysanne made the city’s polluted river water impossible for the council to ignore, the works turned a basic need neglected by the city’s wealthy into a lasting public provision.

The city’s water problem

The water available to King’s Landing was dangerously poor. The river was muddy, and the sewers Jaehaerys planned to carry the city’s offal and nightsoil beneath the streets would make it worse. Blackwater Bay offered no easy alternative: its water was brackish at best and salty at worst. While highborn residents could drink ale, mead, and wine, foul water was often the only choice for the poor.

Design and approval

Septon Barth proposed sinking wells both inside the city and beyond its northern walls. Glazed-clay pipes and tunnels would carry fresh water into King’s Landing, where it would be stored in four large cisterns and distributed to smallfolk through public fountains in squares and at crossroads. The scheme was expensive, and both Rego Draz and Jaehaerys hesitated over the cost. At the next council meeting, Alysanne served each of them a tankard of river water and challenged them to drink it. Neither did, and the wells and pipes were soon approved.

Construction and legacy

Construction took more than twelve years. Once completed, the fountains provided clean water to the people of King’s Landing for many generations. Their significance lay not only in the scale of the infrastructure but in whom it served: the system addressed a hardship borne most heavily by smallfolk, whose access to safe drinking water had been far worse than that of the court and the city’s highborn.
